I thought you were different Not much of a good thing I thought you were nothing Not much of a slipstream Now I know better It's just a trip dream Now I know better You're too much of a good thing I thought I was somewhere Dealing my own game Playing it careful Making a good name Now I know better It's just a a trip dream Now I know better You're too much of a good thing Seemed so easy Standing by your side Smiling and hiding Riding a high tide Glad to have something You were a good ride Now I know better I wish it weren't goodbye
2.
It's your turn to scheme Trash an old pact Tender the threat Of a stab in the back In your cool clique-y scene You feel right at home Just a queen of a warm day Atop a snow throne In my trip drippy world I play the clown I wait for the scene queen To toss me around So this is the scheme You do all you want Watch you look pretty 'Cause you know that we don't
3.
I had an idea Of what it was that we could do I had an idea That we could do What you had planned Didn't you say you told me You had a master plan? Didn't I hear you wonder Where I'd go when you'd gone? Think, thunk, thinking Wondering what I'll do Now that I'm all alone Drink, drunk drinking I'm wandering and it's easier Than being by myself alone I had an idea Of what it means to go there broke I had a thought That I could do What had planned Didn't I kick that thought Deep in your head? Didn't I know I knew That you would win in the end? Think, thunk, thinking Wondering what I'll do Now that I'm all alone Drink, drunk drinking I'm wandering and it's easier Than being by myself alone

When I get to subway platform The crowd there tells me That my waiting has already been done When my train pulls into the station I try not to look at anyone Because my waiting's been done As I ride to my destination I don't need to count the stops Park Street, U Street, Grand Central Station I always know my stop Because my waiting's been done C'mon!
5.
How many times Do you need your name called You try to be heard So you talk loud Overdone but outshined You stand and you connive What do you know What's it worth How can you be a part of our dirt You're so needy and you're so small Want to be a part of it all They don't need you And now you see It's your neediness that they don't need You gotta be special Got to be heard You need to be there Have the the first word They say they love you And then think twice You need to be loved That's your price Now you know Just how I feel You look so hurt But's it's not real You're so needy and you're so small Want to be a part of it all They don't need you And now you see It's your neediness that they don't need How many times Do you need your name called You try to be heard So you talk loud Overdone but outshined You stand and you connive What do you know What's it worth How can you be a part of our dirt You're so needy and you're so small Want to be a part of it all They don't need you And now you see It's your neediness that they don't need You're so needy and you're so small Want to be a part of it all They don't need you And now you see It's your neediness that they don't need They don't need They don't need

Truly I think you missed it How come you said you were someone that you're not You spoke it well I can tell you that The things I say are yours to keep These days I'm overcut These days I'm underwrought These days I'm out of breath These days these days these days Can't find a way to unscrew this up Seems to me I knew It was a blow-up from the start I've drunk it away Don't worry about that Is it so clear I've gone to seed? These days I'm overcut These days I'm underwrought These days I'm out of breath These days these days these days

The Accident 03:54
Jenny's not the same Since the accident toyed with her brain She used to get wild, drink with the mob Now she just smiles and talks about God I wonder if the hurt was as bad as the pain Senses reeling, feeling betrayed Don't understand why these things happen this way Why somebody's wearing your face And how I ran away and I woke up in the same old place Stepped onto the bus the last time I saw us Condescension the soup of the day Frustration bites and guilt on parade You want to touch her, play with her hair But sometimes you don't have a prayer Go hang with the mob And you talk about God
8.
You know he'll never know The feeling of just letting go And leaving it all behind You know he never knew The feeling between me and you And he'll never know it too "Yeah you're right," she said "But none of that matters now "Nothing ever happens, and "Nothing is cool" Hey if that's appreciation You've got a funny way of showing it Every time I look in your eyes I can't help feeling like you're blowing it "Yeah you're right," she said "But none of that matters now "Nothing ever happens, and "Nothing is cool" You know he'll never know The feeling of just letting go And leaving it all behind You know he never knew The feeling between me and you And he'll never know it too "It's all right," she said "And none of that matters now "Nothing ever happens, and "Nothing is cool"
9.
And there's a pile of anger that you step around Resentment lingers about what's not fair Sometimes I wish that I could knock you down Sometimes I wish that I could lay you bare And what you'll come to realize Is the way you have it organized Is never gonna work out right Is never gonna work out right Because you're sugarcoating it You're sugarcoating it You're sugarcoating it
10.
Imagine my disappointment When the opera didn't live up to the cartoon The Met's idea of comic relief Was a washed out Travolta move It's not alright Imagine my disappointment When my opera didn't live up to your cartoon I had the music up loud When I drove by your house So you might think I was cool It's not alright Imagine my confusion Imagine my confusion At the reaction to our New York debut Maybe the stage diver In the blue blazer Landed on the A&R guy's shoe It's not alright It's not alright It's not alright
11.
I sat back and watched you flounder I sat back and watched the tide pull you under You seemed to be waiting for Some kind of lucky break I sat back and watched you flounder And I can't help but wonder Why can't you learn from My mistakes "Cause I'll tell you right now There are no lucky breaks Just when I thought I had it all together Thought I could stop and talk about the weather Here it comes Here it comes again Backsliding again About the time I thought I'd learned a new dance I spun around and slipped into that old trance Backsliding again

about

Spunk Davis, the four-piece rock band that first gained attention in the D.C. scene in the mid-90s, announces Your Turn to Scheme: Best of Spunk Davis 1993-97, a new collection of songs due out October 14th on Really Fast Racecar Records. Including newly remastered versions of the band’s biggest and slept-on singles as well as never-before-heard b-sides and live performances, the 11 tracks were all previously unavailable on streaming platforms until now.

Spunk Davis was formed in 1992 by Patrick Shannon (vocals), Mike Frucht (bass), Henry Donahue (guitar and vocals) and Kenan Forman (drums). In between residencies at hometown venues like DC’s legendary 9:30 Club (the original F Street and current V Street locations) and the Black Cat, the fresh-out-of-college foursome was touring with contemporaries such as Luna, Dismemberment Plan, Low, Bailter Space, and Seven Year Bitch at the times these songs were written.

‘High Tide’, the first single from Your Turn to Scheme, was originally released as a 7-inch in 1994. Recorded at the original WGNS basement studio in Arlington, VA with engineering from Geoff Turner (Gray Matter) and Charles Bennington (Senator Flux), the song charted impressively on college radio and still feels just at home on a Spotify playlist of today’s music as it did on the homemade cassette mixtapes it frequented at the time.

Additional standout tracks include ‘Anthem of Self Loathing’ and ‘Subway’; both recorded at the aforementioned WGNS studios in their new D.C. location made famous as the birthplace of Dave Grohl’s acoustic version of Everlong, ‘Schemer,’ recorded at Don Zientara’s iconic studio Inner Ear that was home to Bad Brains and Fugazi, and ‘Forsythe Country Day Prom Theme’, one of the first-ever recordings from NPR Studios on North Capitol, when they first opened their doors in 1994.
